Planning to Install an EV Fast Charger? Read These Notes First

Before installing a DC fast charger at your car dealership, there are several important considerations to keep in mind. Here are some of the most important ones:

  1. Power Capacity: One of the most important considerations is the power capacity of the charger. DC fast chargers typically require a lot of power, and you will need to ensure that your dealership's electrical infrastructure is capable of handling the additional load. You may need to upgrade your electrical service or install a new transformer to meet the power requirements of the charger.

  2. Space and Location: You will also need to consider the space and location of the charger. DC fast chargers are typically larger than other types of chargers, so you will need to ensure that you have enough space to accommodate the charger. You will also need to consider the location of the charger, making sure it is accessible to customers, and that there is enough space for cars to park and charge. There's also something to be said about having a charger accessible in a well-lit, safe space that is easy to access.

  3. Permits and Regulations: There may be permits and regulations you need to obtain before installing a DC fast charger at your dealership. You will need to check with your local government to determine what permits are needed and what regulations you need to comply with. This may include zoning requirements, electrical codes, and safety regulations.

  4. Cost: DC fast chargers can be expensive to purchase and install. You will need to consider the cost of the charger, any electrical upgrades or modifications needed to support the charger, and ongoing maintenance and service costs.

  5. Demand and Customer Needs: You should also consider the demand for EV charging in your area and the needs of your customers. Installing a DC fast charger may be a good investment if there is high demand for EV charging in your area, and if your customers need to charge their cars quickly.

  6. Network Options: Finally, you must consider what network options you want to offer customers. Many DC fast charger manufacturers have their own charging networks, but third-party networks are also available. You will need to decide which network(s) you want to participate in and what fees you will charge customers for charging their cars.

Installing a fast charger can be a significant job that you want to ensure is done right the first time. In addition, before starting we recommend that you consult an energy consultant to review your current and future plans. For example, if you are considering installing a solar PV system, or converting your heat or other processes to electric sources, it makes sense to set yourself up for future success today and not leave any re-working to be done in the future.
